Hunnewell Projects, Wellesley, Massachusetts

CONSERVATORY, WELLESLEY, MASSACHUSETTS, USA

Originally constructed as an open colonade porch, the Hunnewells used this space as a summer screen porch.  This project involved the restoration of the structure, installation of a bluestone floor with radiant heat and fabrication of custom windows to create a year-round room which has transformed the way this area of their home is used.  This is the 5th and most recent project completed for Francis O. and Elizabeth Hunnewell at their home.  It has enabled them to open the formal living room and dining room to what can best be described as a winter conservatory, protected from the cold New England weather and sounds of passing traffic.  The tall windows, manufactured by Belisle, Inc., of Quebec, Canada, are on pin-hinges and can be removed in the Spring to be replaced with full screen panels.  This preserves the original use of an open screen porch in the summer, with its beautiful views on the open pastures and fields of their estate.
